There are situations when more attention is required. When giving instructions of talking, people usually look at the other person around 75% of the time while if they’re on the receiving end (listening), they look at the other person around 40% of the time.

Nature Of Conversation

The more serious is the nature of the conversation, the longer or more eye contact is usually given. For example, a doctor who is talking to a patient about his serious medical condition hardly breaks eye contact. If the conversation is more about cooperation than competition, eye contact is also generally more. Lastly, if the conversation is about trying to convince the other party to agree, the persuading party tends to look at the person being persuaded more.
